SENIOR HEALTH INSURANCE BENEFITS ASSISTANCE (SHIBA)
When you become eligible for Medicare, either by reaching 65 or because of a disability, you may be faced with the task of choosing a supplementary health insurance plan. If you need help sorting through the options, want to understand the difference between supplemental policies and HMOs, then a visit with a SHIBA volunteer may be just the ticket.
Or, if you already have supplemental coverage, but are thinking about switching to a different policy or provider, then talking with a SHIBA volunteer may also be helpful to you. If you're having difficulty figuring out those Explanation of Benefit statements that Medicare sends you, and aren't sure what medical bills have been paid and which ones haven't, a SHIBA volunteer can help you sort through your current bills and will teach you an easy method of keeping track in the future.
In short, if you need help with health insurance questions or questions about long term care policies, make an appointment to see a SHIBA volunteer in your area by calling the closest NorthWest Senior & Disability Services office . The SHIBA program is available throughout the state of Oregon, so if you live outside Clatsop, Marion, Polk, Tillamook and Yamhill counties, you can call 1-800-722-4134 to locate the SHIBA sponsor in your area.
